My T-10 4 Speed in my 1962 Corvette jumps out of second gear when I let off the throttle. Does anyoone know what causes this?

By Griff Williams on Friday, May 29, 1998 - 04:51 pm:

A friend has purchased several Muncie's and T-10's from a closed rebuild shop. ID'ing the Muncies has been no problem, but I can't seem to find any reference info on how to decode stampings, splines, etc. for the T-10's. Anyone have cross-reference info for these trannies?

Is there a site that has info on iding the Super T-10?
Is the Super T-10 stronger than an M-22?

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Wednesday, July 15, 1998 - 08:32 am:

Super T-10 were never rated as high as M22 gear boxes, but their gear ratios are a hell of alot better than Muncie ratios.

By Landis Rogers on Monday, August 3, 1998 - 10:44 am:

I just completed a rebuild of the t10-1b trans. I used the kit and It couldn't have been easier. I have never rebuilt a trans and didn't have a manual. There were a couple of little trick to get every thing back together, These were high lighted in conversations over the phone. The car had a bad drive line vibration (bad input shaft bearings) and would jump out of 2nd grear (new slider and shift fork). If I was starting from scratch I would have replaced both sliders and shift forks. The gasket set include stopped all the oil leaks I had. First time the trans hasn't dripped. If you want the benefit of my experience send email

How do I tell if my ST10s have nickle gears? I am using ST10s w/264 1st gear ratios behind a LS7 Chevy BB and am concerned about the strength of this trans. Other info: 373 rear in 78 Elcamino. Thanks in advance.
Mike Crosby

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Tuesday, October 27, 1998 - 07:46 am:

To Mike Crosby: You cannot tell from the outside of your ST10 if your gears are 9310 nickel. Nickel alloy gears have drill marks that Identify them as such. A drill mark is a 11/32 OD hole that looks like someone started to drill a hole but stopped. Here goes: The input will have a drill mark where the ID of the front bearing presses on it right below the snap ring groove. The cluster will have a drill mark on the front face above the thrust washer surface. 1st has a drill mark on the back side. 2nd and 3rd have drill marks between the ID bore and the synchro cone surface on the front side.

Does anyone have any experiences with the Richmond version of the Super T-10? Does anyone know haw well they stand up against a Muncie in terms of durability and performance?

What month in 1974 did GM stop using the Muncie 4-speed and switch to the AS9-T-10?

By Mike Crosby on Saturday, November 14, 1998 - 01:26 pm:

One of the trans mount bolt holes is broken on my spare BW ST10. Can this be TIG welded and retapped? I also need to fabricate some additional shifter mounting points to relocate the shifter as far forward as possible. Trans is in a 78 Elky and I want the shifter location to be as close as possible to the original Saginaw.

Thanks in advance

Mike Crosby

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Sunday, November 15, 1998 - 07:49 pm:

To Mike Crosby: Mounting ears on these transmissions snap all the time and can be welded with no problem. Instead of fabricating something on the tail to move the shifter forward just make an adapter plate out of 1/4 inch steel that bolts to the tail and allows the shifter to bolt where you want it.

By Larry Ciraulo on Monday, November 16, 1998 - 04:25 pm:

What aftermarket shifters would be recommended to
replace either a toploader or T-10 shifter from a
66 mustang (GT fastback)? Where can these be
found?

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Monday, November 16, 1998 - 07:48 pm:

To Larry Ciraulo: Hurst shifters sells an aftermarket shifter for this application. Available from any local speed shop or mail order such as Summit or Jegs.

By Joe DAbramo on Monday, November 30, 1998 - 05:38 am:

Aside from gear ratios, are there any differences in T-10s and Super T-10s that were factory installed in GM versus Ford cars? You did an excellent job in documenting the identification of Muncies; will you be doing the same for the T-10?

By Andrew Brown on Monday, December 21, 1998 - 12:44 pm:

I have a problem. I recently had a 4-speed put into my project truck rod. I was originaly told it was a M-22 but when I went to pick up my truck they told me that they had made a mistake it was a Borg Warner which is better anyway. So what is the scoop? I have a 375 hp corvett 350 in my truck. Should I go back and ask for some money back or is this a better transmission as he said. I don't know the numbers but is was stamped with a date like # - # - 78. Is this a super T-10? help....

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Saturday, December 26, 1998 - 06:13 pm:

To Andrew: Yes is is a Super T-10. Is it better? Well unless we know what you are doing with the truck and know what gear ratio is in your rear end - yes and no!

Super T-10's have a weaker torque rating then an M22 but have better gearing which would seem to be a plus in a truck. If you have at least a 3.73 or higher numerical rear end gear then an M22 will work. If not a ST-10 is better.

By Rick Brown on Saturday, January 2, 1999 - 12:59 pm:

I have a 69 Nova 396-375 that has a 1st. design Super T-10. The problem I have is with new synchros the trans shifts slow, like it is working the brass rings to get the slider to engage. After a couple hundred miles it will grind unless you let the rpms come way down. It also will grind when down shifting. It has a 2750# Hays clutch and pressure plate. I have checked the bellhousing alignment and the airgap when the clutch is disengaged. I don't think the problem is in the clutch. I believe the part# for the tranny is AS3T10-W it is the wide ratio, with 2.64 first. Your comments would be appreciated. Rick Brown

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Sunday, January 3, 1999 - 09:28 pm:

To Rick Brown: You problem sounds like a poor clutch release deal. Even though I am aware that you checked your air gap here is a simple check. Let the car get good and warm and idle for a bit. Then press down on the clutch, count to 10 and put it directly into reverse. It should not grind. Also did this happen after you changed the rings only? Whose rings did you use? Does it grind in all gears? Email me direct for a faster response

I JUST RECENTLY ACQUIRED A 1979 Z-28 AND IT HAS A 4 SPEED. I'M NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH STICKS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO TELL WHAT EXACTLY I HAVE. I have a 68 Camaro with an M20 (2.52 first gear) I want to install a '75 Super T-10 (2.88 first gear) in the car .I have changed the rear gear from a 3.73 to a 3.31. I have two questions: Is the Super T-10 stronger than the M20, or would I be better of with the Muncie? Is there a linkage mounting plate out there that will mount to the T-10 that will allow me to mount the Hurst Competition Plus from the Muncie and still have the shifter come through the floor at the right spot? I have a console with gauges, so this is critical. I was hoping to not have to cut and weld on the mounting plate, as I want a stock looking install. A lot to ask for, huh?

By Nigel Shaw on Friday, January 22, 1999 - 12:34 am:

I have a Richmond Street 5 Speed that has about 2000 miles on it since new. The transmission is a little hard to shift, not bad just not that slick. It has the optional 4.06 low and 2.22 second gears. I am running a 10.4" Centerforce Dual Friction clutch with plenty of air gap, a Long shifter correctly adjusted, and Castrol VMX oil ( 80w90 semi synthethic ). The transmission also has an annoying 'shifter buzz' in 4th gear when coasting. The shifter and linkages are all clear of the tunnel and everything is secure. Before I ditch the centerforce for a lighter clutch disc, does anyone have any suggetions.

NewProcess 208f transfer case QUESTION???
Currently has a 3speed w/overdrive.
Now the question, What if any side loaded 4speed will mate up to this transfercase?
This is in a 1982F-150 4x4, which has a 300-six and is going to be replaced with a 302 or 351/w when know what trans will work.
Thanks in advance for info.
Tom

By Tom Fischer on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 01:02 pm:

OK?
Maybe asking wrong question.
Can someone explain the difference between top load and sideload.
My thoughts were that a trans with the shifter that goes into the top of trans is a toploaded and one that has a shifter mounted on the side is a side loaded.
Is this correct?
...Tom

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Saturday, June 12, 1999 - 07:31 am:

To Tom Fischer: Toploading or sideloading has to do with how the geartrain is loaded into the case. The gears in a toploader ford 4 speed are loaded thru the top. Basically if you have a side access cover it's sideloaded. This terminology has nothing to do with stick position. Also most "sideloader" transmissions can't be assembled thru the sidecover anyway!

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Saturday, June 12, 1999 - 07:37 am:

To Tom Fischer: Sideload and topload have to do with how the geartrain is loaded into the case or case access by having top or side covers. Your 208F transfer case probably has a T170 transmission with an all aluminum cae and stick comming out of the topcover. The T170 is actually the proper name for Toploader style transmissions made by Tremac and sold to Ford in the late 60's thru 1980's. There are many variations. You can take the Jeep T170 gearset which is non overdrive and put that in that case.

Can anyone tell me what this is?

By Paul Cangialosi (Admin) on Thursday, July 1, 1999 - 09:07 pm:

To Mark Paul: Count the splines on the T10. This is a first design super T10 it is probably for a ford or an amc car. The spline count on the input and output shafts will help.

By Trsulliv on Wednesday, July 28, 1999 - 07:47 pm:

I just installed a Richmond 4+1 into a 1973 Corvette. The first 4 gears work well, but shifting it into 5th requires a lot of force. It also requires a lot of force to pull it out of 5th, which means I over shoot neutral and grind Reverse fairly frequently. Shifitng into reverse requires about the same aamount of force as 1-4. I'm using a Hurst Super Competition shifter and Amsoil as the lubircant. Where should I start looking - the shifter and linkage, or is it a tranny problem?

Regards,
Tim

By John Price on Sunday, October 31, 1999 - 11:20 pm:

I have two Super T10s for my '75 Corvette. The original transmission (2.43
1st gear) started dropping out of 4th gear when coasting downhill. I bought
a second ST10 (2.64 1st gear) and installed a rebuild kit (bearings, seals,
synchro rings, and shift lugs) in it. I swapped transmissions and at the
same time installed a stage I Centerforce clutch. The new ST10 refuses to
downshift without double clutching or numerous tries. It also grinds when
shifted quickly from 2nd to 3rd. I pulled it back out and put the original
ST10 back in after replacing the same parts in it. It grinds when shifted
quickly from 3rd to 4th. Am I doing something wrong here? Where can a get
a tech manual on rebuilding these transmissions? Could I have a clutch
problem? Could I be using crummy rebuild parts? I really need to find an
illustrated how-to book on these transmissions. BTW, this car has a 3.08
rear end in it right now for freeway cruising and economy, so I'd like to
get the 2.64 1st geasr back in it and working properly.

I have a T10 1B in a 31 Ford behind a 350 Chevy. Just returned from a run to Laughlin, Nv with a very noisy gear box. Pulled the tranny and found the input shaft bearing split in two. No place to go so it didn't grenade. I've had a problem (as have others) with it popping out of 2nd on deceleration. I have it torn down so I would like to fix this problem also. The tangs on the gear look good as does the syncro rings, and the keys look non worn. What is usually the problem???
