Edgar: a 5 speed is a 5 speed and a 6 speed is
a 6 speed. You can't make a reverse gear into a forward gear so your stuck
with a 5 speed. 6 Speeds are available for most aftermarket applications now.

Question, are the BW T-5's used in Jag conversions
actual Ford tranny's or BW units built specifically
for Jag bellhousing bolt patterns ?
By Paul Cangialosi (Admin)
on Thursday, October 29, 1998 - 06:41 am:
To Donald Sweeney: The JT5 is based on the T5
platform and the bellhousing we cast uses the T5 Ford Pattern. It depends on
what application you are using if you can swap out into a Ford unit. We make
our JT5 special for the Jag withe castings. Please see www.5speeds.com/newjt5.htm.

My '87 Astro came from the factory with a
T-5 and I'd like to change to a aftermarket shifter. Since nobody makes
one specificaly for this application, I'll have to use one intended for
something else. Will the Mustang or Jaguar shifters work as well as ones intended
for GM products? The stock lever is straight and located somewhat farther back
than I'd prefer due to the seat location on the chassis. I'd like to
get a shifter with the most user friendly lever. Any suggestions? I'd also
like to compare notes with anyone else that has a Astro with manual transmission
interested in performance.

Holy Moly! I just realized the Astro has it's
very own shifter that's offset to the left of the case. So an aftermarket
shifter won't work. I guess my best bet is to find a junkyard Astro shifter
and try to blueprint it for better operation. Perhaps some synthetic ATF will
help a little. Oh well.

By Carriljc on Wednesday, January 27, 1999 - 09:05 am:
Mr Appa,
I put a Richmond 6 speed in my 68 Vette. Since you have an automatic the crossmember
should drop out. It bolted right up to the bellhousing. On my manual I had to
fabricate a crossmember..it should be easier on your automatic. I had to buy
a T400 slip yoke--GM 3930827 (which you already have) and find a u-joint
to mate it--TRW 20056. The transmission is a little noisier than my old M21,
but it doesn't bother me. The long shifter looks like a very nice piece
of machinery. I had to trim the aft end of the hole where the shifter comes
up through the tranny tunnel..~1/2 inch.

Question #1 : I am looking for the gear ratios
available for a T5 with 23 splines for 5th gear. What ratios are available,
or is there only one?
Question #2 : The T56, what is the spline count on the mainshaft?
I was advised for my project that I need a 23 spline mainshaft for a T5 to connect
it to an AMC viscous transfer case.
Question #3 : Does a T56 have a 23 spline mainshaft, and if not, can it be converted

Mr Appa, i have an 87 iroc and the t-5 is falling
apart, so i wouldn't advise putting one of these in your car, but i did
however contact FORTE'S parts connection. (found their add in the back
of a chevy hi performance mag) and they sell two versions of the tremec,
one for 1675 and one for 19 something. The one for 1675 is rated at 425 ft/lbs.
So it should do well with any eng. combo you have. Their number is (781)
647-1530. they should have a kit to make the swap easy for you.

I’m dropping a 350 with a T5 tranny into a ’85

rear end in the Mazda is 3.909. With those gear ratios I’ll be pushing around
2800 RPM at 70MPH on the highway. I’m aware that this isn’t at all good for
a lot or highway driving. So far I can’t find anyone that can cut me a custom
set of gears for the rear end. I was wondering if there was any way that the
T5 overdrive gear can go from the .74 ratio to around .55 ratio, to help get
the RPMs down, or if something like this is at all possible? Any help would

site.
I'm building a hot rod Ford here in New Zealand, and am running a T5 five-speed

The problem is that the shifter comes up through the floor where the bench front

I have been looking for a remote shifter but with no luck, then someone told
me that Jeeps have a T5 with a shifter that mounts fiurther forward on the casing.
Is this true?
We are looking at machining a shifter mechanism to go where the front cover
is, but this is a lot of work.
Would you mind emailing me with any info you have regarding Jeep T5 shifters,

To Paul Cangialosi: I have heard that you are
a "Guru" on these boxes so here goes- I am putting together a "restorod"
1956 Ford F-100 pickup using a Y-Block 312 and want to install a T-5 behind
it as I've heard that these are strong, dependable gearboxes and would give
me better mileage and performance than the original 3-speed, 3-speed overdrive,
or the B/W T-10 units. There are apparently several sources producing adapters
for this conversion. Being that the T-5 has a longer input shaft than the older
units, is handy due to the incresed depth of the Ford truck bellhousing for
the Y-blocks. This is where the adapter comes in. What I need to know is whether
the box from an S-10, which has the shifter location I require is approximately
the same internally (ratios, gears, etc.) as the unit from Mustangs
and Fairlanes? The S-10 has approximately the same diameter input shaft but
with 14 splines but I think the Ford unit has 10 splines. I may have a problem
with finding a large enough diameter clutch (10" to 11") to
fit the S-10 unit which is the size plate I'll need for the "Y".
Would it be possible to replace the main shaft alone or should I swap the tailshaft
from the S-10 over to a Mustang unit so I can mate eng/trans/bellhousing/clutch
arrangement I need and still meet the shift location I need? Going to bench
seats is out of the question as far as I'm concerned on this truck (I'd
go to an automatic first and I don't like that idea at all!) so please
give me your feelings about this situation. Thanks for any and all advice/help.
Rick Coder coder@fbnet.net P.S. I will probably run a 3.50 to 3.70 rear end
ratio, I'm not certain what trans final ratio would be most acceptable for
my project.

It seems I have basically the same question as
a few others here. My application is trying to drop a t-5 into a Ford Falcon
with bench seat. The Falcon is shorter than the Mustang so the shifter would
pop up too far back. I had heard that I could take a s-10 t-5 and a mustang
t-5 and put them together to get what I want. Question is... is this possible,
what is required and could it be done by a beginner. I actually dropped in the
t-10 that's in the car now so I do have some skills but not much.

Clint - there are no 5 speeds other than the richmond street 5 speed that
fit that car. The richmond box is not an overdrive and is designed to run with
a 3.08 rear end gear. T5's from camaros can be put in but crossmember mods
