JT5 5 Speed Concept

JT5 stands for Jaguar Transmission 5 speed. It is the first 5 speed ever to be built from new components to fit a Jaguar.Started in 1995. Before the JT5 existed any 5 speed conversion for a Jaguar was based on some sort of used or modified transmission. We could have chosen any platform to use as a basis for a conversion but the Borg Warner T5 proved to be the best based on design, ratio availability, and parts availability. The Borg Warner T5 World Class platform is the largest mass produced 5 speed ever made spanning over 27 years with over 265 variations. The Borg Warner T5 is still in production today since 1982. With our idea of using new castings, mainshafts and shifting internals we were able to shorten the T5 to fit in the Jaguar E-Type as well improve strength and shift feel. The T5 has a huge aftermarket parts base, making parts availability a snap.

The concept in brief is simple. Design a gearbox to fit the Jaguar so that the shifter comes up in the right place, improve on shifting, improve on the engineering, improve performance. The JT5 started as a race unit first then migrated into the street platform. Therefore the street concept utilizes some of the race designed components for better strength and reliability as well as easier installation. Our Nascar style floating yoke combined with a solid tube driveshaft offers reduced rotating mass, easier installation, and improved torque capacity as opposed to standard fixed non floating flanges. All Model S E-Type transmissions are equipped with short throw shifters, chrome plated or stainless steel sticks, and billet hard anodized knobs.

Although our concept and design has been copied by a few "Jaguar" specialists, it is amusing to see these people claim their designs as "ground breaking", "ultimate" or the "best" . None are transmission specialists. Nothing they have done compares to the strength and reliability of the JT5. Internet hype is huge now. Misconceptions that people for example, that are known for their quality work making NON transmission related products, somehow validates them as experts in the field of complex transmission design. None have sold the volumes of transmissions we sell. Keep in mind our transmissions are 50 percent stronger than any copy out there and also fit every flywheel and clutch combination.

We broke the JT5 into 5 different platforms:

  • Model S - for all E-Types and Mark II cars
  • Model XK - for all XK cars
  • Model RC - Enduro Racing Clutchless (No Longer Available)
  • Model CR - Club Racing 5 Speed
  • Custom - Custom units for any application ( MGB, Aston Martin, Volvo, etc..)

Model S. It is the short version. It duplicates Jaguar internal speedometer gear ratios, shifter locations and shifter look. Improved shift feel, ratio availability, strength, and design. All parts supplied for use with all E-Type and Mark II manual shift models including a drive shaft. Although some people think we had to make a new driveshaft because the transmission is 1.5 inches longer in 6 cylinder E-Type installations ,this is not true. A factory shaft can collapse to that length. The fact is, a solid shaft is required because of the heavy duty slip yoke. It also makes better sense to make one transmission, rather than three since a V12 E-Type and Mark II are different in length. Less rotating mass of a solid tube driveshaft versus a slip splined shaft combined with a floating yoke improve overall performance and strength.

Rather than reinvent proven mounting techniques,
The JT5 tail uses a standard GM heavy duty transmission mount
that bolts to a stamped steel " Jaguar Like" mount plate.

Model XK. It is the long version. It duplicates Jaguar internal speedometer gear ratios, shifter locations and shifter look. Improved shift feel, ratio availability, strength, and design. All parts supplied for use with all XK120, XK140 and XK150 manual shift models including a drive shaft.

Model RC. This can be in either short or long versions. This is a full non synchro race transmission using 9310 nickle spur gears with face tooth engagement. Speedo gears are optional. It is offered in 2 ratios. The short version has an optional magnesium tailhousing as well. Recently used in Dave Hinton's XK120 which won the 2002 Rolex Endurance Challenge. See our racing page for more information. As of 2008 this transmission has been discontinued.

Model CR. This can be in either short or long versions. This is a full synchro race transmission using 9310 alloy gears for club racing. Speedo gears are optional. It is offered in 2 ratios. Currently in several SCCA cars and street / strip drag cars pushing over 500HP. Successfully used in the La Carrera Panamericana Race for 4 years in several cars.

Custom. This can be in either short or long versions or with about 6 other tailhousing / case combinations we have. We have made the JT5 sucessfully fit in MGB, Bugeye Sprite, Aston Martins, TVR, Mercedes, Alfa, Morgan, and Volvo applications.
