Low Drag - Los Olas !

Low Drag Leads the Pack of Historic Racers

Tony Parkinson of Vicarage Motorcars ( USA ) called me sometime in October, 2000 and asked if I'd drive the Low Drag down to the First annual Los Olas Blvd. Classic Car Show in Fort Lauderdale Florida. The date was November 5th, 2000. Usually I don't do first time shows. However this show promised to be interesting. Each car displayed at the show was by invite only. The cars also had to either have won some award or had to have some other unique significance. This makes for an interesting show. People get to see some rare autos and enjoy the ambiance of Los Olas Blvd. The ladies get to do some serious shopping as well. I figured my wife Cora wouldn't mind being strapped into the racing buckets for a 45 minute ride with the promise of some hardcore shopping lurking in the future.

To prepare the car for the show required me kicking back the timing a bit, adding 20 gallons of premium (unleaded) gas to the fuel cell, giving the car a quick detail and loading some Metallica and Deftones CD's into the Pioneer CD changer.

The Low Drag prepped at my house before the show. Deftones and Metallica CD's loaded, gassed, detailed and retimed.... Click on the picture for a larger version.

Driving this car on I-95 during Sunday morning traffic is work. You are driving a "race car" with a stiff suspension and the Broward County roads are a little bit rough compared to the Palm Beach roads I drove on a few months back. Once checking in at the staging area a crowd immediately gathered around asking me several questions which little did I know I'd have to answer over and over again thru out the day. There were sections for Muscle Cars, Hot Rods, Racing Cars, PreWar stuff, Exotics, and Motorcyles. I saw a V12 Jaguar powered Hot Rod that had one of the most custom made trick fuel injection systems (see picture). This show was well organized, well promoted, had top shelf cars, and a great crowd. My wife said the shopping was fantastic. After a twilight dinner at Mangos we packed up and headed back. If you are ever in South Florida next year during this time, this is a must see event. Best of all it is FREE to the public.

Common Low Drag Questions / Statements:

  • What is it?
  • Why do they use rivets?
  • Is that a V12?
  • I used to have one of those..
  • Is it fast?
  • Hey, it's a Jaguar!
  • Is this a replicar?
  • Why do you have air conditioning?
  • Is this the car that crashed in France?
  • The real car didn't have K&N Filters!

Note: most people were fascinated by the rivets and just had to touch them!
